Artist Statement

I like my work to be beautiful. This is important to me. Whilst I'm fascinated by ideas and concepts, I have grown to understand that beauty means enjoyment. And the best thoughts are the enjoyable ones.

Qualifications / Education

Chris graduated from Middlesex University in 2001 with a BA(hons) in Sonic Arts. Modules included History of Art and Visual Culture.

He then furthered his qualifications with a distinction in Carpentry and Joinery at Hackney College under the expert tuition of World Skill Olympics Judge - Martin Burdfield. His was the highest mark in the country for that year.

After that he took a course in Green Woodwork with the distinguished facilitator Mike Abbot, who taught him how to make chairs using only traditional methods and tools. This experience served to confirm Chris's direction towards sculpture in wood.

Chris is influenced by the work of David Nash, Andy Goldsworthy, Anish Kapoor and composers such as John Cage, Brian Eno and Eric Satie.

"After four tortured years, more than 400 over life-sized figures, I felt as old and as weary as Jeremiah. I was only 37, yet friends did not recognize the old man I had become."
